Floyd is Sick

Yo Dawgs!

Before you tease me about caring about the cat... you have to understand a couple of things, ok?

When Gomer crossed the rainbow bridge a couple of months ago, Floyd would let me chase him around the apartment. And Floyd would let me eat his food sometimes. And I could chase him around the apartment. And I could kiss him in the face when it smelled like tuna. And I could chase him around the apartment.

Anypaws, Floyd wasn't feeling too good when dogmom came back from her conference late Monday night. And he vomited breakfast on Tuesday. And he vomited breakfast on Wednesday. When dogmom came home for lunch and saw that Floyd didn't eat his breakfast but vomited anyways... she took him to Pet Crossing Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic in Bloomington.

Floyd doesn't like Pet Crossing as much as Gomer did and I do. He's a cat. He likes everything to always be the same. Dogmom says that's why she thinks I'm part cat... but Floyd's worse than me about learning about new things and new places.

Anypaws, I was scared that Floyd wouldn't come home. You know, like Gomer didn't come home when he was sick. So dogmom brought Floyd home last night; but, he has to go back to the hospital today.

Dr. Roth says that Floyd has pancreatitis, likely due to the stress of being away from me while dogmom was at the conference. He's dehydrated and he lost almost a pound in the past week. And his liver enzyme is raised a bit.

Anypaws, put your paws together and say your puppy prayers that Floyd is ok soon. I miss chasing him around the apartment.

Wow! Yard Sale Results!

Hi Dawgs!

So, DogMom sat outside in the rain all day on Saturday (after being sick for three days... stupid human) so that she could help with the yard sale for pets needing veterinary care... (see previous post).

I guess I can forgive her for not spending the day with me. I mean, well, it was raining anypaws... so I didn't really want to walk around the preserve and get all wet.

Anypaws, Pet Crossing raised more than $1200 !!! for the animals!

Got Stuff? ... Need Stuff?

Hi Dawgs!

Sneaking in a post while dogmom is staring at the big paper brick again. She's been looking at the same two for a few weeks now. I don't get it... she tries to read them out loud to me, but she sounds a lot like the Charlie Brown parents when she does. Something about farmokologee and something about pearosites called neematoads and cestoads. I don't see any toads or farms anywhere near here. I think she's gone totally bonkers since Gomer's gone.

Anypaws... I don't have much time before she sees me on the laptop. So the point is this... Pet Crossing Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic is hosting a yard sale next Saturday, October 3rd from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All the proceeds will benefit the homeless pets that live at the clinic while their moms and hooman kids are in the domestic abuse shelter. The animals get tons of TLC, a safe place to stay, a soft place to sleep, and food and water thanks to the wonderful employees that work with dogmom. But some of them need a lot more care... like dental surgery and expensive medications for their arthritis and kidneys and livers and stuff.

So, the staff are hosting a yard sale to raise money for the pets. Over the course of a year, the employees and the hospital spend about $75k on the pets that need homes and care. Can you help just a little bit?

Gomer Has Crossed The Rainbow Bridge

Last night, at 7:15 p.m., I held Gomer's head as he quietly walked across the rainbow bridge.

He noticeably hadn't felt well for about a week, which I attributed to the stress of moving to a new place, then leaving on vacation, then bringing back a puppy from Ohio to live with us for a week. But, when he wouldn't eat at all, I noted that he was severly jaundiced and rushed him into the vet at Pet Crossing Animal Hospital. The bloodwork, of course showed very high liver values.

I tried very hard to ignore his pleas to let him go; I wanted the analytical me to win. To run all the tests and get all the information before making the ultimate decision. But, after five hours of treatments and IV fluids, I looked into his eyes and he asked me to please let him go. It was one of the most difficult things I've had to do. But I know in my heart that I did the right thing. Maybe not for me, but for him.

I miss him horribly and expect that I will for a very long time. I take comfort in knowing that I am a much better person for having accepted the scared little dumpster dog into my home, my life and my heart.

To steal a post idea from Hercules' dad when Herc crossed the rainbow bridge, here's a short list of things that I learned from Gomer. As those who knew him will understand, he taught me so much more than the items listed below... but these are the things I remember today.

Things I learned from Gomer...

• This world is a scary, dangerous place. But, with the right people to watch your back, everything will turn out ok. That... and a lot of the things that we fear the most aren't really all that scary once we understand them.
• Every single being, no matter what their faults and how mean they can be, has value. Even the guy who threw Gomer in the dumpster had value… if he hadn’t, I wouldn’t have had Gomer as a part of my life for the past nine years.
• With the right encouragement and acceptance, every single one of us can excel at fulfilling our purpose in life. Gomer’s first evaluation was that he’d always be feral and never be a good pet. Luckily, enough of us believed more in him than in the opinions of the “experts.”
• Don’t always act in the way that someone else believes is appropriate. Sometimes you need to run around like a crazy person and release pent up energy. And, sometimes you just need to lie down and let someone who loves you rub your belly.
• Life is what you make it. You can be scared, dissatisfied and blame others for your problems… or you can accept what it is and hold onto the hope that the rewards and treats will always come later.
• If your people can’t hear your words, talk to them with your eyes, your paws and your tail. And keep communicating how much you love them until they understand.

Opie and I are doing fine, all things considered. Thank you for listening with your eyes today.

Pet Fest, Ren Fest ...

So, dogmom is working this weekend. Or, so she says. She came home smelling like other dogs.

She said she's working at the Pet Crossing booth out at the PetFest at the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee. We think she's doing something else.

I mean, whenever else she works with the people at Pet Crossing, we get to go. I mean, well, we get to go sometimes. Other times, she makes us stay home.

We don't know what this Renaissance Festival is. I mean, we probably wouldn't want to go, since we don't know what it is and all. But when she said Pet Fest... I mean, then we were interested, ya know?

We heard her talking to Tory at Dog Pad when she got home, too. I mean, well, at least if she's going to go play with other dogs, well, she should let us go do the same, dontcha think?

Back Under the Knife...

So, dawgs...

I think some of you know that I went in to see Dr. Kate last week to fix the tooth that I broke the top off of... again. It was the lower right canine tooth. I had a root canal on that one I think with Dr. Visser in Arizona before I moved to Minnesota. Or maybe he did the upper right canine tooth. I don't remember exactly.

Anypaws, it was the lower right one that had a root canal a long while ago and then last week I broke off the restorative sealant off the top of the tooth. So Dr. Kate sedated me and tried to fix it even if it was only going to be temporary until next time I had to get the anesthesia.

Well. Dogmom says I must have decided I wanted some more surgeries. Cuz I broke off the restorative again over the weekend and had to go back to Pet Crossing yesterday. I had lots of stuff done and could feel that Dogmom was anxious about it. She kept saying "Awe, Gomer!" and "Geesh." and "Now what?" while I was sleeping.

I had to have two more big teeth pulled that were broken. Dr. Kate was able to fix the canine tooth so it didn't have to come out. (Dogmom says to tell you it's the nubby little one closest to my tongue in the top picture below.) And, Dr. Kate lanced my eyelid where the wasps or spiders bit me a couple of weeks ago and got out bunches of gunk and probably a stinger or two.

Dogmom says I don't look nearly as georgeous as Gemi when I wake up from anesthesia...


She says I look more like a drunken sailor that lost the bar fight. Not sure what that means, but it kinda made her laugh. Today... I'm hiding in the corner with my swollen cheek and eye...


Trying to avoid the dreaded ice hand that wants to hold my head.

Gemi's Surgery Went Wonderfully!

We won't talk about the fact that we spent the whole day at Dog Pad on Wednesday. Or the fact that we didn't get to go to Pet Crossing with dogmom. Or the fact that dogmom spent the day with Gemi and Randi instead of with us. Or even the fact that she forgot about us at Dog Pad.

Yup... she forgot to come pick us up. Completely. She called Tory after we were all fed and tucked in for the night. Can you believe it?

Anypaws. We're not talking about that today. 'Cuz we know she was helping Gemi and Randi with Gemi's mouth surgery.

And since we've both gone through several mouth surgeries, we know what Gemi was going through. And how Randi was nervous. So it was good that dogmom was there to help them.

What we wanted to talk about today is that dogmom said that Gemi's surgery went really well! She's a little (literally!) trouper.

She had to have 14 twoofers pulled. All in the front. All her top front teeth, including her canine fangs. And all her little bottom teeth in the front.

She got to keep her bottom canine teeth. (Whole ones... not half of them like Opie and me.) And she got to keep all of the other teeth in the sides and the back that she had. We say it that way because she actually had nine teeth that were missing from her little mouth that had never developed. Good thing, cuz her mouth was so small she probably would have had to had them pulled, too.

Anypaws. Gemi still has 19 teeth so she will be able to play and look pretty and, more importantly, eat crunchy food and treats after her mouth heals.

We think she's beautiful... even with those missing teeth and her mouth a little swollen after surgery...

Gemi's Surgery is Wednesday!

Hi dawgs! We want to thank all the DogsAyeView blog readers who donated money and good wishes to Gemi and Randi so that Gemi can get her mouth fixed and not be in pain any more. Her surgery was scheduled for August 6th... but it got moved ahead and it will be tomorrow (today if you're reading this on Wednesday...)!!!

So, dogmom said that she'll be busy at Pet Crossing with Gemi and Randi and their mom and dad. We're gonna go to Dog Pad for the day... dogmom thinks it will make us forget that Gemi's having her surgery. We think that's just foolishness. We'll just think of Gemi while we're playing with Tory.

Dogmom said she'll try to post for us while we're at Dog Pad... or Randi might try to post on the IMOM.org web site during the day. It all depends on how things are going. (Not posting doesn't necessarily mean bad news... it just means they're busy keeping Gemi safe and calm.)

So, everydog, put your paws together and say some puppy prayers for Gemi, Randi and the Raymonds that everything goes smoothly.

UPDATE! Gemi's at "All Funds Raised" !!!

HI everydog!

We just heard the news that the fundraising through IMOM.org has Gemi's surgery cost at the "All Funds Raised" level! This means that Randi can schedule the surgery!!! Wonderful animal angels across the world (including some DogsAyeView readers!) donated money for Gemi's surgery.

The funds will pay the low estimate for the surgery. Hopefully, the costs won't be more than that! So put your paws together that that is the case!

Can You Help Us Help Randi?

You remember Randi? She's the one that came to our house to take us on walks before the dogmom was downsized at the newspaper. Now we have to walk with dogmom. It's not nearly as fun.

Anypaws... Randi's dog Gemi is desperately in need of surgery to remove a bunch of teeth from her mouth. There are too many teeth for the size of her mouth and her mouth is crooked and infected because of it. They've been trying to save money for her surgery since last summer.

Then Randi's dad had to stop working because of his health. And then Randi's mom got sick and was in the hospital for a month. And Randi lives with them and takes care of them and works two jobs to pay for everything.

Anypaws... Gemi has been on pain meds and antibiotics for almost a year in anticipation of eventually getting surgery. Now, she needs the surgery SOON! The meds are wreaking havoc on her little 12 pound body. Here's a picture of Randi and Gemi (the tiny one) and Gemi's brother Teddy and Randi's dad that we posted after the Iron Dog Triathlon last September.

Gemi's surgery will cost somewhere between $2000 and $3000. We won't know for sure until she's under anesthesia and xrays are done. She's going to Dr. Kate at Petcrossing (who does our teeth, too!) if we can help her raise the money.

Two Events Next Weekend !

Dogmom said there are two events coming up next weekend that will help pets that need a good home. At the first one, only the humans can attend... but at the one on Sunday, the pets can come, too!

On Saturday, May 31st:
Southwest Metro Animal Rescue is holding a Spring Fling Vendor Show! Home-based business owners will be showing off their wares and the event helps SWMAR to help abandoned, unwanted and homeless pets. SWMAR is a 100% volunteer organization that doesn't have a shelter facility; all of the animals are in foster care.

The Vendor Show is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chaska Community Center. Address is 1661 Pine Ridge Rd. in Chaska, MN. Here's a map!

There will be over 25 vendors - Arbonne, Party Lite, Pampered Chef and jewelry makers, etc.! DogMom will be there selling wine-bottle serving trays and she's donating 20% of sales to SWMAR. There will also be a raffle and food/treats for purchase.

We hope you all can make it!

On Sunday, June 1st:
Pet Crossing Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic is holding their third annual "FurEver Fun Day!"
Pet-related businesses, authors and artists will be there. You can tour the hospital where dogmom works part-time... and you can meet Dr. Kate and Dr. Hollee who fix our teeth!

The event will benefit Animal Ark Shelter and the Cornerstone Women's Shelter's "Protection for Pets" program - you know, the one we chose to give our barkday money to...

Fundraiser Update and Reminders...

Hi Dawgs!

Dogmom finally 'membered that she didn't tally up Opie's barkday visitors and comments for his part of the Dogs' Aye View fundraiser.

Anypaws, before she tells you the results, let me bark that I knew that I was your favorite of the Dogs' Aye View pups. I made almost twice as much money as Opie did!

On Opie's barkday we had 64 visitors ($6.40) and 37 comments ($9.25). That's only $15.65 for the animals! (Aaaarrrrooooohhh! I raised $43.85 on my pupped-day!)

Dogmom felt bad for him, so she actually did count all the visitors and comments for the whole weekend, too. That means that Opie raised $26.50 and I still beat him by raising almost twice as much...

Anypaws... the total is $70.35. So, dogmom is going to donate $75 to the "Protection for Pets" program for the Cornerstone Womens Shelter. The program provides boarding and medical care for pets that otherwise might be left behind (or worse) if a woman wishes to leave an abusive situation. Research shows a high correlation between animal abuse and child/spouse abuse. Sometimes a woman will stay in an abusive situation because she can't take her pet to the shelter. This program, sponsored and funded by local veterinarians and hospitals, ensures that the animals have a safe place to stay while mom is getting the help she needs to get back on her feet.

Uh-Oh... All's Quiet ...

Dogmom says that when things are quiet it means something's about to go awry at our house.

She's silly.

It was warm and springy at our house this weekend. We liked walking with dogmom on the new trail behind our house. It goes all the way under the new highway (that's not open yet). And past a couple of neighborhoods and eventually even links to the trail that went behind the house where we used to live.

We walked all the way over there yesterday and then we walked back. Dogmom was impressed that we didn't bark at the kids riding their bicycles on the trail, even though there were about eight of them.

And we didn't bark at the baby riding in the stroller with her mom and dad walking behind her.

And we didn't bark at the boy throwing sticks in the creek.

And we didn't bark at the neighbor with the Schnauzer while he was mowing his lawn.

And we didn't bark at the neighbor where the rabbits live under the trees when he was pulling the junk from his shed.

And we didn't even bark at Floyd when we saw him sitting in the window! Although, Gomer did think he could climb the side of the house and get to him for a minute.

Anypaws, we went to Dog Pad today to play. (Don't tell Dr. Hollee at Pet Crossing... Gomer's not supposed to go play yet; he has to wear his dreaded basket muzzle so that he doesn't play ball or tear his stitches out.

Clean Teeth are So Much Better

Hi Dawgs!

I'm feeling a lot better, 'specially since all the morphine and anesthetic has worn off and the world seems more normal now. I'm not hearing colors, as Tracy at Pet Crossing says!

As promised, here are some photos from my oral surgery. (If you click on the photo, you can see it bigger.) First, some "before" and "after" shots of how great a job Eliza and Tracy did when they cleaned my twoofers:

Ouch! Can you imagine if dogmom didn't find that?

I'm sure glad my dogmom brushes my teeth regularly (even though not always every day like she should... sorry Dr. Kate!). Because she brushes my teeth, she found my broken tooth before it got too infected and my whole mouth got sick. She says that's one reason why Opie and Floyd and me have to be subjected to the humiliation all the time.

We don't mind... we get special treats (Hills Prescription t/d diet) whenever we get our teeth brushed.

Gomer Back to Surgery...

I've been trying to tell dogmom something's wrong and doing everything I can to get her attention this past week. Instead of listening, she puts me in doggie jail and tries to find new ways to contain me to the yard.

Doesn't she get it that when I run away, it means that Gomer has another broken twoof?

Geesh. I don't know how I'm ever gonna get her trained.

Anypaws, Gomer went to Pet Crossing today to have Dr. Hollee take out some more twoofers. Dogmom thinks two or three more will be gone when he comes home.

Shhhh... TELL EVERYDOG!

Ok. We're not supposed to tell anybody about this. "Dogmumm's" the word, so to speak. We know that all our dogblogging buddies can keep a secret and not tell anybody, right?

So... here's the deal.

We overheard dogmom saying that she's thinking about not buying us treats and toys on our birthdays (coming up!) this year. Instead, she's thinking about doing something that will help the doggies and kitties that need stuff ... like toys and treats and, well, frankly, like homes and people to love them. And people who will drive them to places like Dog Pad and Pet Crossing and bark parks and stuff. And people who will hire people like Jennifer and Randi to take their dogs out when they're going to be working long days.

Anypaws... we digest.

What we're trying to do is tell you to tell everydog and everycat and even everyhampster and everybunny you know to do something on our birthdays... without actually telling you to do it. Cuz if we tell you to do it, then we'll get in trouble cuz we didn't keep the secret.

Here's what you gotta do. You gotta mark your day planners and calendars and fire hydrants or whatever else will help you remember these dates: April 1 and May 1. Those are our birthdays (or at least close approximations of the day we were pupped.) I, Gomer, will be 8 years old on April 1. Opie will be 8 years old on May 1.

Anypaws... For every visitor to our blog on our birthdays, dogmom is going to donate 10 cents to a homeless dog or cat in need. EVERY visitor, whether they leave a comment or not.

Here's the best part, though. Every comment on our blog on our birthdays means she's going to donate 25 cents to homeless pets. Can you believe it?

It might be sponsorship of a senior pet (since we're seniors now, she says... we think we still look like dogs, though.) It might be helping with surgery costs for an animal that needs some. She hasn't exactly decided yet.

That's it. That's the secret. If you visit our blog on our birthdays, dogmom will spend even more of her own money on an animal that needs it than she usually does.

Ok, dawgs. So one of dogmom's friends gave her grief the other day at Pet Crossing because we haven't posted on our blog for WEEKS! Anypaws, we're posting.

There, Dooley! Is your dogmom happy now? (Snicker, Snicker...)

Guess we should 'splain to all our regular readers and posters. See, Dooley-Bean is a cutie-pie Maltese. We wuf her. Even if she doesn't have her own blog. Even if she does run away and hide from us whenever we see her at Pet Crossing. Even if her dogmom gives our dogmom grief for hogging the computer and not letting us post so much.

Dooley-Bean had a bunkmate until recently, so we're not giving her any grief. Just her dogmom.

See, Dooley's buddy Casey had to go over the rainbow bridge a couple of months ago. He was sick and not even Dr. Kate could make him any better. We were really sad when Casey had to say goodbye. Everydog and everyhuman that knew him was.

But, Dogmom says that Casey is running and playing and feeling no pain over in the meadow beyond the rainbow bridge. And, that he probably found Skyper and Floppy, the dogs that dogmom had before she brought us home. And the three of them are all the same size and they're too busy chasing Spidey to be worrying about us right now.

Pupdate ... or is it Kittendate?

Hi everydog! We're sorry we haven't posted for a while. Dogmom's been taking the computer with her when she leaves for wherever it is she goes every day. And we've been spending more time with Tory at Dog Pad, which isn't a complaint of course.

Anypaws, dogmom said we could use the computer today 'cuz she doesn't need it till she gets home from Pet Crossing tonight. So, we gotta be quick, since we're at Dog Pad and don't want to miss any play time!

• We still have the kitten living at our house. Dogmom calls him Floyd. Says he's a barber with razors that we should stay away from or something.
• Opie's twoofers are much better.
• My twoofers are much better, too.
• My paw fungus is almost all gone.
• Dogmom's proud that we can wait a whole 10 seconds before we try to attack Floyd when we see him. (Baby steps, she keeps saying...)
  
• Floyd had his 6-month vet visit with Dr. Kate today!
• Dogmom's still in school and working two jobs to pay for our doctor bills.
• We wuf you guys and are glad you still come visit our blog sometimes, even though we haven't been able to post as much!
